About Course

An Old Testament Survey class is a course that provides an overview of the books of the Old Testament in the Bible. The class typically covers the historical and cultural background of the ancient Near East, including the political, social, and religious context in which the Old Testament was written.

The course usually starts with a study of the Pentateuch, which includes the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These books provide the foundation for understanding the rest of the Old Testament and the Hebrew Bible as a whole.

The class also covers the historical books, which tell the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile. These books include Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, and Ezra-Nehemiah.

The prophetic books are also a major part of an Old Testament Survey class. These books include the Major Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel) and the Minor Prophets (Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi).

Other topics covered in the course may include the poetry and wisdom literature of the Old Testament, such as Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.

Overall, an Old Testament Survey class provides a broad understanding of the historical, literary, and theological aspects of the Old Testament, and how it has influenced both Jewish and Christian traditions.
